Beskrivning

This copper engraving depicts the legendary Roman hero Horatius Cocles defending the Pons Sublicius bridge against the attacking Etruscan army. The dramatic composition is centered on the chaotic battle at the fortified wall, with numerous figures fighting with shields and spears. The scene emphasizes the Neoclassical themes of heroic sacrifice and military courage, typical of large-scale historical paintings of the early 19th century.

Vincenzo Camuccini was one of the most celebrated Italian Neoclassical painters and draftsmen of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He held influential positions in Rome, such as Director of the Vatican Mosaic Studio and President of the Accademia di San Luca. His style, characterized by grand historical and religious compositions with rigorously classical forms, set the standard for Italian painting during the Napoleonic era.
