This hand-colored engraving originates from the Picture Book for Children (Bilderbuch für Kinder), a monumental educational encyclopedia designed to provide a comprehensive visual education on natural history, geography, and ethnographic subjects. The collection includes detailed zoological plates featuring various feline species such as wild cats and lynxes, as well as a plate depicting small mammals like shrews and porcupines. Additionally, the set contains ethnographic and topographical illustrations, including a scene of a cochineal plantation in Mexico showing the cultivation of prickly pear cacti, and a coastal landscape featuring a Chinese junk sailing past a rocky island topped with a pagoda.
Friedrich Justin Bertuch was a German publisher, patron, and author who became a key figure in the cultural life of Weimar. He is most famous for his monumental Bilderbuch für Kinder, which consisted of twelve volumes published between 1790 and 1830, featuring thousands of meticulously engraved and hand-colored plates designed to provide a comprehensive visual education for young people.
