This plate originates from the Picture Book for Children (Bilderbuch für Kinder), a landmark educational encyclopedia of the late 18th and early 19th centuries designed to provide visual instruction on natural history and the physical world.
Friedrich Justin Bertuch was a German publisher, patron, and author who became a key figure in the cultural life of Weimar. He is most famous for his monumental Bilderbuch für Kinder, which consisted of twelve volumes published between 1790 and 1830. The work featured thousands of meticulously engraved and hand-colored plates, becoming one of the most significant educational tools of its era for teaching children about the diversity of the animal kingdom.
