Bilder George Shaw (1751–1813) – Head of Giraffe – Engraving (1801)
Beskrivning
This zoological illustration presents a detailed study of the head of a giraffe, focusing on its unique cranial features. The print captures the large, expressive eye, the textured coat, and the characteristic ossicones or horn-like protuberances atop the head. Published in London at the turn of the 19th century, this work aimed to provide an accurate anatomical record of the species for scientific study, as the giraffe remained a subject of great curiosity and rarity in Europe during this period.
George Shaw was a distinguished English botanist and zoologist who served as the keeper of the Natural History Department at the British Museum. He was instrumental in the early systematic classification of exotic fauna, often being the first scientist to provide formal descriptions of animals arriving from the Southern Hemisphere and Africa. Shaw was a founding member of the Linnean Society and is most widely recognized for his extensive publication, General Zoology, or Systematic Natural History, which consolidated the era's biological knowledge into a comprehensive series.
