Bilder Alain Manesson Mallet (1630–1706) – Line of Countervallation and its Profile – Engraving (1683)
Beskrivning
This military illustration displays a plan for a line of countervallation, a defensive fortification used during a siege to protect the besieging army from attacks by a relieving force. The upper portion of the print shows a top-down bird's-eye view of a fortified town surrounded by a continuous defensive perimeter, situated within a landscape of agricultural fields and small structures. The lower section features a cross-sectional perspective of the earthworks, detailing the geometric structure of the trenches and ramparts required for effective perimeter defense in 17th-century warfare.
Alain Manesson Mallet was a French military engineer, cartographer, and mathematician who served under King Louis XIV. He is best known for his monumental work, Description de l'Univers, a comprehensive five-volume geographical and historical encyclopedia that included hundreds of detailed maps and topographical views. Mallet's career was defined by his ability to translate complex engineering and geographical concepts into clear visual diagrams, making him one of the most significant technical illustrators of the late 17th century.
