Bilder Alain Manesson Mallet (1630–1706) – Reconnaissance of Places – Engraving (1683)
Beskrivning
This military engraving provides a topographical study focused on the reconnaissance of a fortified position. The print features a star-shaped bastion fortress at its center, surrounded by a detailed landscape consisting of agricultural fields, winding roads, and a small village with a church. The bird's-eye perspective was a standard convention in 17th-century engineering, designed to illustrate how the geometry of a fortification integrates with the surrounding terrain and lines of approach.
Alain Manesson Mallet was a French military engineer, cartographer, and mathematician who served under King Louis XIV. He is best known for his monumental work, Description de l'Univers, a comprehensive five-volume geographical and historical encyclopedia that included hundreds of detailed maps and topographical views. Mallet's career was defined by his ability to translate complex engineering and geographical concepts into clear visual diagrams, making him one of the most significant technical illustrators of the late 17th century.
