Bilder Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville (1680–1765) – Sea Ears and Sea Pipes – Engraving (1742)
Beskrivning
This conchological illustration displays a scientific arrangement of various marine shells, primarily focusing on abalone, historically referred to as sea ears, and tubular shells known as sea pipes. The upper portion of the plate features several perspectives of the Haliotidae family, showing both the polished interior with its iridescent nacre and the textured, perforated exterior. The lower portion includes elongated, tusk-like dentalium shells and sections of pipe-like structures. Each specimen is labeled with a letter, serving as a systematic record for collectors and naturalists of the 18th century.
Antoine-Joseph Dezallier d'Argenville was a prominent French naturalist, connoisseur, and art historian who made significant contributions to the study of shells and garden design. He is best known for his influential work, L'Histoire naturelle éclaircie dans deux de ses parties principales, la lithologie et la conchyliologie, which became a standard reference for shell collecting during the Enlightenment. His meticulous approach to classification and high-quality illustrations helped elevate conchology from a casual pastime to a formal branch of natural history, influencing both scientific study and the decorative arts of his era.
