Bilder Jan Luyken (1649–1712) – The Execution of Laurens Jansz. Nooddruft – Engraving (1685)
Beskrivning
This historical illustration depicts the public execution of Laurens Jansz. Nooddruft, an Anabaptist who was burned at the stake for his religious beliefs in Antwerp in 1577. The composition features a central group of figures, including a condemned man being led toward the place of execution, surrounded by a crowd of soldiers, monks, and onlookers. In the background, a large pyre is visible, and the silhouette of a city with prominent spires suggests the urban setting of the event. The scene captures the somber atmosphere of a public martyr’s death, utilizing detailed linework to emphasize the emotional reactions of the various participants.
Jan Luyken was a prolific Dutch poet, illustrator, and engraver active during the late 17th century. While he began his career producing secular and often erotic imagery, a profound religious conversion led him to devote his later work to spiritual and moral themes. He is best known for his monumental contributions to the Martyrs Mirror, a seminal work documenting the history of Christian martyrs, and his detailed depictions of various trades in Het Menselyk Bedryf. Luyken's style is characterized by its meticulous linework and ability to manage complex, multi-figure scenes with dramatic clarity, making him one of the most influential printmakers of the Dutch Golden Age.
