Bilder Sebastiano Serlio (1475–1554) – Architectural Study of an Arched Rusticated Portal – Woodcut (16th Century)
Beskrivning
This architectural plate, labeled "Liber Quartus" (Book Four), depicts a monumental arched portal characterized by heavy rustication. The design features a semi-circular arch supported by massive, textured pilasters that create a sense of strength and "delicate rusticity." Above the arch is a classic triangular pediment. This work serves as a technical study in Mannerist architecture, exploring how rugged, natural textures can be integrated into the formal geometric rules of the Doric order. The extensive Latin text below the image provides a theoretical discussion on the principles of symmetry, firmness, and the "acumen of art" required for such masonry work.
Sebastiano Serlio was a preeminent Italian Mannerist architect and theorist whose treatise, Tutte l’opere d’architettura et prospetiva, became a foundational resource for Renaissance design. He was the first to organize the classical orders into a coherent, visual system that could be easily understood by architects and builders across Europe. His Book Four, from which this plate originates, specifically focuses on the five orders—Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite—and was instrumental in spreading the architectural language of the Italian Renaissance to France, England, and beyond.
