Beskrivning
This hand-colored map provides a comprehensive overview of the Kingdom of France during the mid-18th century, specifically organized by its military administrative districts. The work illustrates the country's borders, major river systems, and coastal features, with each of the thirty-seven military governments delineated by colored boundaries. A highly decorative title cartouche is featured in the lower-left corner, incorporating the French royal coat of arms, a winged figure blowing a trumpet, and a soldier in classical armor. The map includes parts of neighboring regions such as southern England, the Netherlands, and the Mediterranean coastline, reflecting the geopolitical context of the era.
Georges-Louis Le Rouge was a distinguished cartographer, military engineer, and hydrographer who served King Louis XV of France. Born in Hanover, he established a prolific workshop in Paris, becoming one of the most significant map publishers of the Enlightenment period. He was celebrated for his technical accuracy in military plans and hydrographic charts, as well as his popularization of the English landscape garden style in France. His extensive body of work includes general atlases, detailed provincial maps, and early topographical records of the Americas, contributing significantly to both military strategy and commercial geographic knowledge.
