Bilder Georges-Louis Le Rouge (1712–1790) – Map of Champagne (La Champagne) – Copperplate engraving (1748)
Beskrivning
This detailed map depicts the historical province of Champagne in northeastern France, showing its various administrative sub-regions and natural features. The engraving highlights major cities such as Reims, Troyes, Châlons, and Meaux, along with the extensive river networks of the Seine, Marne, and Aisne that define the territory's geography. Enclosed within a decorative rococo-style cartouche in the upper right corner, the title is accompanied by a mileage scale. This work was originally published in Paris as part of the Atlas Nouveau Portatif, a work specifically designed for use by military officers and travelers during the mid-18th century.
Georges-Louis Le Rouge was a prominent 18th-century cartographer, engraver, and military engineer who served as the Geographe du Roi (Geographer to the King) for Louis XV. Born in Hanover as Georg Ludwig, he moved to Paris around 1740, where he established a successful publishing business on the Rue des Grands Augustins. Le Rouge was highly regarded for his technical precision in creating military plans, provincial maps, and hydrographic charts. His diverse body of work includes significant contributions to the mapping of North America and the popularization of English garden designs in France, and he famously collaborated with Benjamin Franklin on a French version of the Gulf Stream chart.
