Bilder Georges-Louis Le Rouge (1712–1790) – Map of the Austrian Circle (Le Cercle d'Autriche) – Copperplate engraving (1743)
Beskrivning
This hand-colored map illustrates the Austrian Circle, one of the administrative groupings of the Holy Roman Empire during the mid-18th century. The engraving depicts a vast territory including the Archduchy of Austria, the Duchy of Styria, Carinthia, Carniola, and the County of Tyrol, as well as parts of neighboring Bohemia, Bavaria, and the Venetian Republic. Significant topographical features such as the Alps and major river systems like the Danube are represented alongside fortified cities and regional boundaries. A decorative oval cartouche in the lower-right corner contains the title, publication details, and the artist's royal privilege, while a secondary illustration in the upper-left corner shows a dynamic scene of cavalry in a landscape.
Georges-Louis Le Rouge was a distinguished cartographer, military engineer, and geographer to King Louis XV of France. Born in Hanover, he established a prolific workshop in Paris, where he became one of the most influential map publishers of the Enlightenment. He was celebrated for his technical precision in military plans and hydrographic charts, often incorporating the latest geographical discoveries into his works. His extensive body of work includes general atlases, detailed provincial maps, and early topographical records of North America, contributing significantly to both military strategy and commercial geographic knowledge during the 18th century.
