Beskrivning

This technical architectural engraving presents a systematic catalog of various pedestal designs, categorized by their specific structural and decorative functions. The top register illustrates pedestals for standing statues and seated figures, featuring round, octagonal, and baluster forms. The middle section displays specialized designs for funerary columns and pedestals for recumbent figures, while the lower register showcases large-scale pedestals for equestrian statues and complex groups. Many of the designs incorporate intricate bas-relief panels depicting historical or allegorical scenes, demonstrating the refined French Baroque aesthetic.

Augustin-Charles d'Aviler was a preeminent French architect and theorist whose comprehensive manual, "Cours d'architecture," revolutionized architectural education in the late 17th and 18th centuries. After studying in Rome, he returned to France and became the architect to the Province of Languedoc, where he executed numerous civil and ecclesiastical projects. His "Cours d'architecture" was celebrated for bridging the gap between high architectural theory and the practical needs of builders, providing standardized models for everything from structural proportions to minute decorative details. D'Aviler's work remained the definitive reference for the French classical style for decades, influencing generations of architects and decorators across Europe.
