Bilder Jan Goeree (1670–1731) – The Arch of Septimius Severus (Arcus L. Septimii Severi Augusti) – Copperplate engraving (18th Century)
Beskrivning
This grand architectural illustration depicts the Arch of Septimius Severus, a monumental triumphal arch located in the Roman Forum. The central engraving presents a frontal view of the three-arched structure, intricately detailed with Corinthian columns, narrative relief panels depicting Roman military campaigns, and a comprehensive Latin dedicatory inscription across the attic. Atop the arch, a large statuary group features the emperor and his sons in a triumphal chariot drawn by six horses, flanked by equestrian figures.
Jan Goeree was a prolific Dutch engraver, painter, and author active during the late 17th and early 18th centuries in Amsterdam. A student of Gerard de Lairesse, he became renowned for his mastery of architectural subjects, classical allegories, and book illustrations. His work frequently documented the ruins and monuments of antiquity, contributing to the Enlightenment's fascination with classical archaeology and architectural theory. Goeree's engravings are characterized by their technical precision and dramatic use of perspective, qualities that made him a sought-after collaborator for major archaeological and historical publications of his era.
