Bilder Johannes Janssonius (1588–1664) – Map of Lionnois, Forest, and Beaujolois – Copperplate engraving (17th Century)
Beskrivning
This hand-colored map depicts the historical French provinces of Lyonnois, Forez, and Beaujolais, located in the eastern part of the country. The work illustrates the regional topography, including mountain ranges, dense forests, and the major river systems of the Loire and the Saône. Cities such as Lyon, Villefranche, and Montbrison are prominently marked among a detailed network of smaller towns and villages. The geography is bounded by the territories of Burgundy to the north and the Principality of Dombes to the east. A decorative title cartouche in the upper-left corner is flanked by colorful drapery and a lion’s head, while a central coat of arms featuring three fleur-de-lis surmounted by a crown represents the French royal authority. A mileage scale (Milliaria Gallica communia) is positioned in the lower-left corner within a separate ornamental frame.
Johannes Janssonius was a preeminent Dutch cartographer and publisher active in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age. As the son-in-law of Jodocus Hondius, he took over the Hondius publishing firm and significantly expanded its output, becoming a major rival to the Blaeu family. Janssonius is best known for his monumental "Atlas Novus," which grew to include several volumes covering the known world, maritime charts, and celestial maps. His work is celebrated for its high level of artistic detail, fine copperplate engraving, and the incorporation of contemporary geographical discoveries. Throughout his career, he produced thousands of maps and established a vast international distribution network, solidifying his role as one of the most influential figures in the history of cartography.
