Beskrivning
This hand-colored map depicts the southern Balkan Peninsula, including the historical regions of Macedonia, Epirus, and Achaia in ancient Greece. The topography illustrates mountainous terrain, major river systems, and the intricate coastlines of the Ionian and Aegean Seas, with numerous islands such as Corfu and Cephalonia clearly marked. The work identifies significant ancient and contemporary cities, including Thessaloniki and Larisa, reflecting the 17th-century European fascination with classical geography.
Johannes Janssonius was a preeminent Dutch cartographer and publisher based in Amsterdam, who became a central figure in the expansion of the Mercator-Hondius atlas tradition. After marrying into the Hondius family, he eventually led the firm and produced the monumental "Atlas Novus" and "Atlas Major," which were among the most ambitious publishing projects of the 17th century. His work is celebrated for its technical precision, artistic ornamentation, and the integration of contemporary geographical knowledge with historical data. Janssonius's maps were highly influential and distributed widely throughout Europe, solidifying Amsterdam's status as the global center of map production during the Dutch Golden Age.
