Johannes Janssonius was a preeminent Dutch cartographer and publisher based in Amsterdam during the 17th century. He was a central figure in the competitive world of Dutch mapmaking, taking over the Hondius publishing firm and expanding the Mercator-Hondius atlas tradition. His most significant achievement was the monumental "Atlas Novus," which grew to include volumes on land maps, maritime charts, and celestial bodies. Janssonius’s work is celebrated for its technical precision, artistic ornamentation, and high production values, which helped establish Amsterdam as the premier global center for cartography during the Dutch Golden Age.
