Bilder Johannes Janssonius (1588–1664) – Map of the Duchy of Brabant (Brabantiae Ducatus Tabula) – Copperplate engraving (17th Century)
Beskrivning
This hand-colored map provides a detailed cartographic representation of the Duchy of Brabant, a historic core region of the Low Countries. The work illustrates the complex topography of the area, featuring the major cities of Brussels, Antwerp, Louvain, and Bois-le-Duc, alongside a dense network of smaller towns, waterways, and wooded areas. The map is oriented with West at the top and includes a highly decorative title cartouche in the lower-left corner supported by cherubs and floral garlands. In the upper-right corner, the coat of arms for Brabant, featuring a golden lion on a black field, is prominently displayed.
Johannes Janssonius was a preeminent Dutch cartographer and publisher based in Amsterdam during the Dutch Golden Age. After marrying the daughter of Jodocus Hondius, he became a partner in the family’s publishing house and eventually took over its operations, significantly expanding the Mercator-Hondius atlas tradition. His most ambitious project was the "Atlas Novus," which grew to include several volumes covering land maps, maritime charts, and celestial observations. Janssonius’s work is celebrated for its technical precision, artistic ornamentation, and high production values, which helped establish Amsterdam as the premier global center for cartography in the 17th century.
