Bilder Daniel Stoopendaal (1672–1726) – The City Hall and the Eastern Church in Amsterdam – Copperplate engraving (18th Century)
Beskrivning
This topographical engraving presents two significant architectural landmarks of Amsterdam within a single composition, separated by a central vertical line. The left panel illustrates the grand City Hall (now the Royal Palace) on Dam Square, designed by Jacob van Campen in the Dutch Classicist style. The building is shown with its rhythmic windows and central clock tower, overlooking a square populated with figures and horse-drawn carriages. The right panel depicts the Oostersche Kerk (Eastern Church), a Protestant church characterized by its massive central dome and symmetrical facade. Both images feature the heraldic coats of arms of the city and specific districts in the upper corners, held by decorative ribbons. This work serves as an important visual record of the urban prosperity and civic pride of the Dutch Golden Age.
