Bilder Ambroise-Louis Garneray (1783–1857) – View of Calais, Taken from the Long Bridge (Vue de Calais, Prise du long Pont) – Aquatint with hand coloring (19th Century)
Beskrivning
This expansive maritime scene depicts the bustling port of Calais from the perspective of the Long Bridge. The composition is filled with various sailing vessels, ranging from small local fishing boats in the foreground to larger merchant ships with tall masts docked along the harbor in the distance. The city's silhouette is visible on the horizon, punctuated by the prominent towers of the lighthouse and the church of Notre-Dame. The water is rendered with rhythmic, dark waves that contrast with the pale, expansive sky, which occupies more than half of the image.
Ambroise-Louis Garneray was a renowned French painter, engraver, and sailor who became one of the most important marine artists of the 19th century. Having spent years at sea, including time as a prisoner of war in England, he possessed an intimate technical knowledge of ships and rigging that lent his work exceptional realism. Garneray served as the official Painter to the Duke of Angoulême, Grand Admiral of France, and later as the director of the museum in Rouen. His atmospheric aquatints and oil paintings are celebrated for their accurate documentation of French ports and naval life, making his prints highly sought after by collectors of maritime history and fine topographical views.
