Robert John Thornton was a prominent English physician and botanical writer, best known for his monumental work, The New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus von Linnæus, which included the famous Temple of Flora. Unlike the dramatic, full-color landscape backgrounds found in the Temple of Flora, his anatomical plates focused on clinical precision and taxonomic clarity. Thornton collaborated with top-tier engravers such as Warner to ensure that every stamen and pericarp was rendered with scientific accuracy for the medical and botanical communities of the early 19th century.
