Bilder Robert John Thornton (1768–1837) – The Different Kinds of Pericarps – Copperplate engraving (1800)
Beskrivning
This scientific botanical plate, titled The different Kinds of Pericarps, presents a comprehensive study of the various types of seed-bearing structures (fruit) in plants. The engraving features delicate stipple and line work to distinguish between fleshy fruits, dry pods, and woody cones. A note at the bottom clarifies that the "Capsule" is omitted from this plate, as an excellent example of it was previously provided in the anatomy of the Thorn-apple. The work was published in London by Dr. Thornton on July 1, 1800.
Robert John Thornton was a prominent English physician and botanical writer, best known for his monumental work, The New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus von Linnæus. These anatomical plates were designed to provide the rigorous scientific foundation for his more famous and artistic Temple of Flora. Thornton’s collaboration with skilled engravers such as Warner ensured that these plates served as both high-quality academic tools for 19th-century naturalists and exquisite examples of Georgian-era scientific printing.
