Beskrivning
This scientific botanical plate, titled Anatomy of the Bean, illustrates the germination and early growth stages of a bean plant. The composition features three primary specimens in various orientations—Eye downwards, Eye flat, and Eye upwards—to demonstrate how the Plume (plumule) and Radicle (root) emerge from the seed regardless of its initial position in the soil. The engraving features fine linear hatching and stipple work to differentiate between the smooth surface of the bean and the fibrous texture of the developing root system. This plate was published in London by Dr. Thornton on November 1, 1799.
Robert John Thornton was a prominent English physician and botanical writer, best known for his monumental work, The New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus von Linnæus. While his Temple of Flora is famed for its romantic landscapes, these anatomical plates were essential to his mission of educating the public on the physiological mechanics of plants. By collaborating with skilled draughtsmen like Sydenham Edwards and engravers like Warner, Thornton produced scientific records that remain among the most aesthetically significant botanical works of the Georgian era.
