Bilder Victor Levasseur (1800–1870) – Map of the Department of Haute-Garonne – Steel engraving with hand coloring (19th Century)
Beskrivning
This decorative map illustrates the Department of Haute-Garonne, located in southwestern France. The central map is color-coded to delineate its various administrative districts and is surrounded by an elaborate border filled with allegorical figures, local statistics, and products of the region. The upper portion features a central coat of arms flanked by portraits of notable local figures, possibly including the physicist Pinel or the mathematician Fermat, surrounded by garlands of fruit and musical instruments. The side panels contain detailed text blocks regarding the region's history, administration, and natural resources. At the bottom, a narrative scene shows a laborer tending to a pack animal laden with tobacco and truffles, with the skyline of Toulouse and its iconic bridges visible in the background.
Victor Levasseur was a renowned French engineer and cartographer active during the mid-19th century. He is best known for his Atlas National Illustré des 86 Départements et des Possessions de la France, from which this plate originates. Levasseur’s maps are highly prized by collectors not only for their geographical accuracy but for their exceptional artistry. Unlike traditional technical maps, his works provide a "snapshot" of French provincial life, combining cartography with ethnography and commercial history. His maps remain some of the most iconic visual records of the Second Republic and Second Empire eras in France.
