Bilder John Webber (1751–1793) – Various Articles at the Sandwich Islands – Copperplate engraving (18th Century)
Beskrivning
This ethnographic engraving illustrates a collection of artifacts from the Sandwich Islands (modern-day Hawaii), as documented during Captain James Cook’s third voyage. The work is characterized by the precise linear detail used to document the textures of wood, feathers, and woven fibers.
John Webber was the official artist on Captain Cook's third and final Pacific voyage (1776–1780). His primary responsibility was to provide a visual record of the people, landscapes, and artifacts encountered by the expedition. His drawings, which were later engraved for the official account of the voyage, were the first images of Hawaii and other Pacific islands ever seen by the European public. Webber’s work remains an invaluable primary source for anthropologists and historians, capturing the material culture of Pacific societies at the moment of first contact with the West.
