Bilder John Webber (1751–1793) – Caps of the Natives of Oonalashka – Copperplate engraving (18th Century)
Beskrivning
This ethnographic engraving illustrates two distinct head coverings worn by the indigenous inhabitants of Oonalashka (modern-day Unalaska in the Aleutian Islands), as documented during Captain James Cook’s third and final voyage. The work is characterized by the precise linear hatching used to document the intricate textures of the woven materials and the functional design of the headwear.
John Webber served as the official expedition artist under Captain James Cook between 1776 and 1780. His primary mission was to create an exhaustive visual record of the geography, people, and material culture of the Pacific and Arctic regions. Upon the expedition's return, his drawings were engraved for the official publication A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, providing Europeans with their first detailed views of Aleutian culture. Webber's contributions remain foundational to the fields of ethnography and Pacific history.
