This engraving depicts a biblical scene from the Passion of Christ, showing Jesus being led through a crowded urban setting by Roman soldiers and officials. The central figure of Christ is shown bound and wearing a crown of thorns, surrounded by guards holding pikes and clad in contemporary Renaissance-style armor. In the background, elaborate classical architecture with balconies and arched portals suggests a grand judicial or palace environment, filled with onlookers and further activity related to the trial. The lower margin contains a Latin inscription that provides theological commentary on the event, and the work is characterized by the fine line work and complex narrative composition typical of late sixteenth-century Flemish printmaking.

Adriaen Collaert was a highly influential Flemish engraver and publisher based in Antwerp during its golden age of print production. He was a leading member of the prominent Collaert family of artists and worked closely with other renowned masters, including his father-in-law Philips Galle and the painter Jan van der Straet. Collaert is best known for his religious and allegorical series, as well as his detailed natural history subjects, which were widely disseminated across Europe and established him as a master of technical precision and narrative clarity in the medium of engraving.
