Beskrivning

This engraving depicts two distinct arched panels featuring neoclassical figures and mythological deities. The upper panel, labeled Tab. V, shows a gathering of five figures including Mercury, identifiable by his caduceus and winged hat, standing alongside four classically draped men and women. They are framed by two winged female figures in the upper corners who hold laurel wreaths above the scene. The lower panel, labeled Tab. VI, illustrates three figures in a rugged landscape; a central male figure holds a staff and gestures toward two seated companions, while decorative quivers and bows adorn the upper corners of the arch. These illustrations likely served as allegorical frontispieces or plates for a historical or mythological treatise, rendered with the precise linework and structured composition characteristic of early eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking.

Jan Goeree was a prolific Dutch engraver, painter, and poet active in Amsterdam. A student of Gerard de Lairesse, he became one of the most sought-after book illustrators of his time, providing hundreds of designs for historical, classical, and scientific publications. His work is noted for its adherence to neoclassical principles, featuring elegant figures and balanced compositions that bridged the late Baroque and early Enlightenment styles. Goeree’s contributions significantly influenced the visual presentation of scholarly literature in the Netherlands during the early eighteenth century.
