This illustration depicts a naturalistic study of a picarel, identified by the French title Picarel Martin Pecheur. The fish is characterized by its slender body, vibrant yellow fins with blue spots, and blue horizontal markings along its silvery-green flanks. The specimen is presented in a lateral profile against a plain, light background to highlight its anatomical features, including the fine detail of the scales and the sharp rays of the dorsal fin. This work was published as part of Les Poissons: Synonymie, Description, Moeurs, Frai, Peche, an extensive nineteenth-century survey of ichthyology that combined scientific classification with high-fidelity visual documentation.

Jules Rothschild was a prominent Parisian publisher and author active in the late nineteenth century, specializing in high-quality natural history and horticultural books. His publishing house was renowned for producing luxuriously illustrated volumes that utilized advanced printing techniques to achieve realistic color and detail, often working with leading scientists of the era.
