Bilder Jules Rothschild (1838–1900) – Atlantic Bonito – Hand-colored Engraving (1876–1877)
Beskrivning
This illustration depicts a naturalistic study of an Atlantic bonito, identified by the French title Pelamyde Commune. The fish is characterized by its streamlined, hydrodynamic body, silvery underbelly, and dark blue-green dorsal surface marked with characteristic slanted stripes. The specimen is presented in a lateral profile against a plain, light background to highlight its anatomical features, including the fine detail of the fins and the sharp, powerful tail. This work was published as part of Les Poissons: Synonymie, Description, Moeurs, Frai, Peche, an extensive nineteenth-century survey of ichthyology that combined scientific classification with high-fidelity visual documentation.
