This illustration depicts a naturalistic study of a blue shark, identified by the French title Squale Bleu. The specimen is rendered with a streamlined, hydrodynamic body, a long pectoral fin, and a characteristic heterocercal tail. The coloration transitions from a dark blue-grey on the dorsal surface to a lighter, silvery-white underbelly, emphasizing the countershading used for camouflage in open waters. The shark is presented in a lateral profile against a plain, light background to highlight its anatomical features, including the visible gill slits and sharp, powerful fins. This work was published as part of Les Poissons: Synonymie, Description, Moeurs, Frai, Peche, an extensive nineteenth-century survey of ichthyology that combined scientific classification with high-fidelity visual documentation.

Jules Rothschild was a prominent Parisian publisher and author active in the late nineteenth century, specializing in high-quality natural history and horticultural books.
