Bilder Jules Rothschild (1838–1900) – Shagreen Ray – Hand-colored Engraving (1876–1877)
Beskrivning
This illustration depicts a naturalistic study of a shagreen ray, identified by the French title Raie Chardon. The specimen is shown from a dorsal perspective, highlighting its diamond-shaped body, broad pectoral fins, and long, tapering tail adorned with several rows of defensive spines. The coloration is rendered in warm ochre and sandy tones, with subtle iridescence and textured markings on the fins that mimic the rough, sandpaper-like skin characteristic of the species. This work was published as part of Les Poissons: Synonymie, Description, Moeurs, Frai, Peche, an extensive nineteenth-century survey of ichthyology that combined scientific classification with high-fidelity visual documentation.
