Bilder Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola (1507–1573) – Various Types of Marble Pavement Compartments – Engraving (1767)
Beskrivning
This illustration presents a detailed architectural study of various patterns for marble flooring, titled Diverses especes de compartimens de pavez de marbres. The composition is organized into a complex grid showing a wide array of geometric designs, including checkerboards, star weaves, diamond patterns, and octagonal shapes. In the center stands a large circular rose window divided into seven different sections, each illustrating a different radial compartmentalization technique. These models were intended to serve as technical references for architects and craftsmen in the design of luxurious interiors, emphasizing the mathematical precision and ornamental elegance typical of Renaissance and Neoclassical design.
Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola was one of the most influential Italian architects of the sixteenth century, a leading exponent of Mannerism and successor to Michelangelo at the construction site of Saint Peter's Basilica. He is best known for his treatise Regola delli cinque ordini d'architettura, which became a fundamental text for the training of architects throughout Europe for over three centuries. His works, ranging from grand villas to complex urban projects, reflect a deep understanding of classical geometry and proportions. This particular engraving, published in later editions of his works, demonstrates the enduring influence of his aesthetic canons on architectural decoration and the applied arts.
