Bilder Georges-Louis Le Rouge (1712–1790) – Map of Swabia – Engraving (1755)
Beskrivning
This engraving presents a highly detailed topographical and political map of the Swabian Circle in southwestern Germany, titled La Souabe. The composition features a dense network of territorial boundaries, highlighting numerous duchies, principalities, and free imperial cities such as Wurttemberg, Baden, and Augsburg. The geographical landscape is meticulously rendered with river systems, including the headwaters of the Danube, and shaded relief for mountainous regions like the Black Forest. A decorative title cartouche in the upper left corner is flanked by allegorical figures, while a smaller scale cartouche with cherubs occupies the lower left. Territorial borders are accentuated with varied hand-colored outlines in red, green, yellow, and blue to distinguish the complex overlapping jurisdictions of the Holy Roman Empire. This illustration was published as a technical plate for a geographical atlas intended to provide accurate cartographic and political information during the mid-eighteenth century.
