This engraving depicts the biblical scene known as "Ecce Homo" (Behold the Man). Pontius Pilate presents the scourged and crowned Christ to the hostile crowd, who stand outside the Praetorium. This print is Plate 15 from the series Passio, mors et resurrectio Dn. Nostri Iesu Christi (Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ), based on designs by Jan van der Straet (Stradanus).
Philip Galle was a prominent Netherlandish engraver, publisher, and print dealer, establishing a major workshop in Antwerp. He produced and published a vast number of prints after designs by leading contemporary artists like Stradanus, playing a significant role in disseminating Mannerist art. Jan van der Straet, known as Johannes Stradanus, was a Flemish Mannerist painter and designer primarily active in Florence, where he worked extensively for the Medici court.
