Bilder Georges-Louis Le Rouge (c. 1712–c. 1790) – Terrestrial and Celestial Globes (Globe Terrestre, Globe Céleste) – Engraving, Hand-Coloured (Circa 1748–1756)
Beskrivning
This engraving is a comparative and instructional plate illustrating the difference between the Terrestrial Globe (Globe Terrestre) and the Celestial Globe (Globe Céleste). The two globes, shown mounted on decorative pedestals, are centrally featured. The terrestrial globe depicts geography, while the celestial globe illustrates the constellations and positions of stars. The sheet is further illustrated with auxiliary diagrams explaining astronomical concepts, such as the eclipses of the Sun and Moon (Eclipses de la Lune, Eclipses du Soleil), and the arrangement of the planets in the solar system. The text below the celestial globe provides a brief French-language description of the Sun's circumference.
Georges-Louis Le Rouge was a German-born French military engineer and cartographer who became the Geographical Engineer to the King (Ingénieur Géographe du Roi). Active in Paris from the 1740s, he compiled and published highly detailed maps and atlases, often incorporating the latest geographical and scientific knowledge into works such as the introductory plates for his widely disseminated Nouvel Atlas Portatif (1748) and the Introduction à la Géographie (1756).
