This large copperplate engraving provides a historical and geographical overview of the region spanning the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Western Asia. The map details the lands around the Black Sea (Zwarte Zee), the Mediterranean, and the Caspian Sea, showing realms such as Sarmatia, Muscovy, Anatolia, and Persia, often referencing both ancient and modern names. The print includes a decorative, figurative cartouche and was published in a geographical or biblical atlas produced by Halma's Leiden publishing house.
François Halma was a significant Dutch publisher and bookseller who operated during the late 17th and early 18th centuries in Utrecht and Leiden. Although primarily a publisher, he oversaw the production of numerous works of historical and biblical geography. His firm was known for producing large, detailed copperplate maps included in scholarly Bibles and comprehensive historical atlases.
