Bilder François Halma (1653–1722) – Map of the Western Roman Empire and Surrounding Lands – Copperplate engraving (18th Century)
Beskrivning
This large copperplate engraving provides a historical map detailing the geographical scope of the Roman Empire, focusing primarily on the Western and part of the Eastern territories, encompassing Europe, the Mediterranean Sea (Mare Internum), and North Africa (Africa Veterum). The map delineates the political boundaries and ancient place names of the vast region, from the Iberian Peninsula to Scandinavia and Egypt. The cartouche is highly decorative, featuring allegorical Roman figures and ruins, typical of historical maps published to illustrate classical scholarship.
