This large, hand-colored copperplate engraving provides a detailed geographical map focused on the historical kingdom of Bohemia and its adjacent regions in Central Europe. The map meticulously records political boundaries, rivers, towns, and the mountainous topography of the area, with boundaries highlighted by contrasting colors. A prominent, ornate title cartouche decorated with strapwork and fruit is situated in the upper left corner. This map was published as part of the influential Mercator-Hondius Atlas series, which served as a primary cartographic reference throughout the 17th century.
Gerardus Mercator was a Flemish cartographer, cosmographer, and geographer of the 16th century who revolutionized navigation by developing the Mercator projection. He is widely recognized for publishing the first collection of maps under the name Atlas, Atlas sive Cosmographicae Meditationes. His meticulous and accurate mapping became the foundation for European cartography for generations, forming the basis of many subsequent atlas publications.
