Bilder Georg Braun (1541–1622) and Frans Hogenberg (c. 1535–1590) – View of Limbourg
Beskrivning
This engraving provides a panoramic topographical view of the city of Limbourg in present-day Belgium, situated strategically on a hill overlooking the Vesdre river valley. The detailed view shows the city walls, prominent buildings including the castle and church, and the surrounding agricultural landscape populated with figures engaged in pastoral activities and livestock. This plate was published in the monumental Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the first comprehensive atlas dedicated to city views from around the world.
Georg Braun was a German cleric and cartographer who served as the principal editor of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, compiling the plans and writing the descriptive texts. Frans Hogenberg was a Flemish engraver and cartographer, based primarily in Cologne, renowned for engraving the majority of the plates for both the Civitates and Abraham Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Together, their collaborative work produced one of the most ambitious and influential cartographic publications of the late 16th century, offering invaluable insights into urban geography and life.
