Beskrivning

This map is a geographical chart detailing North America and its surrounding regions, including the Caribbean and the northern part of South America (Terre Ferme). The title, L'AMÉRIQUE SEPTENTRIONALE, is prominently displayed in the upper left cartouche. The map depicts the territorial claims of the major European powers of the time, labeling regions such as Nouvelle France (New France), Louisiane (Louisiana), and Nouvelle Espagne (New Spain). The delineation of boundaries and coastal features is finely executed. The political divisions are distinguished by contemporary hand-colouring.

Georges-Louis Le Rouge was a German-born French military engineer, surveyor, and cartographer who became the "Ingénieur Géographe du Roi" (Geographical Engineer to the King). Active in Paris from the 1740s, he was a prolific publisher who compiled, engraved, and printed thousands of maps, including general world atlases such as the Nouvel Atlas Portatif (1748) and the Introduction à la Géographie (1756), where this map of North America would have been featured.
