This engraving depicts Saint Arsenius the Great, one of the Desert Fathers, seated in a simple shelter and deeply engrossed in reading books. The scene is set in a wilderness landscape, emphasizing his solitary and scholarly life. The print is Plate 12 from the series Solitudo Sive Vitae Patrum Eremicolarum (Solitude or Lives of the Hermit Fathers), illustrating the lives of various Christian hermits and saints. The engraving was executed by Johann Sadeler I based on a design by Marten de Vos.
Marten de Vos was a leading Flemish painter and draughtsman in Antwerp during the late 16th century. Known for his history paintings, altarpieces, and portraits, he was also a prolific designer of prints, working in a late Mannerist style. Johann Sadeler I was a prominent Flemish engraver from a renowned family of printmakers, celebrated for his skillful reproductive engravings after major artists of his time.
