Beskrivning

A stunning lithographic poster advertisement for the opera Hellé, a four-act work with music by Alphonse Duvernoy and a libretto by Camille du Locle and Charles Nuitter, staged at the Académie Nationale de Musique (Paris Opéra). The design, executed in the soft colors and elegant lines of the Art Nouveau period, depicts a tragic, classically themed scene. A tall female figure, presumably the title character, is shown draped in a long white garment and veil, standing before the columns of a ruined classical temple. In the background, under a somber sky, a line of other figures in white robes appears against a landscape and sea. The work is signed "Steinlen" in the plate and characterized by a melancholy mood appropriate for a Greek tragedy. This print is a small-format reproduction from the prestigious monthly portfolio Les Maîtres de l’Affiche (The Masters of the Poster).

Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen was a Swiss-born French painter, printmaker, and illustrator of the Art Nouveau period, best known for his posters and graphic works depicting Parisian life and bohemian Montmartre. Although often celebrated for his scenes of cats and working-class subjects, he was a prolific master of lithography, designing posters that perfectly blended artistic appeal with commercial purpose. This image showcases his ability to convey deep emotion and refined composition, demonstrating why his poster designs were selected for inclusion in the elite Les Maîtres de l’Affiche collection.
