This engraving with hand-coloring depicts the Government of the Île-de-France, the region surrounding Paris, illustrating towns, roads, forests, and bordering provinces like Normandy and Picardy. The map features a decorative title cartouche and is characteristic of the great Dutch atlases of the 17th century. Jodocus Hondius was a Flemish cartographer, engraver, and publisher. He is famous for reviving the work of Gerardus Mercator by publishing a new edition of his atlas, the Mercator-Hondius Atlas, which became one of the most significant and influential cartographic works of the 17th century.
