Bilder Giacomo Lauro (1550–1640) – The Fountain of Paul V on the Janiculum – Engraving (1612)
Beskrivning
This architectural engraving depicts the monumental Fontana dell Acqua Paola, also known as Il Fontanone, situated on the Janiculum Hill in Rome. The print showcases the fountain's grand triumphal arch design, featuring five large arched niches and a massive commemorative inscription honoring Pope Paul V under the papal coat of arms. Built as the terminus of the restored Acqua Traiana aqueduct, the fountain is presented with its ornate sculptural details, including eagles and dragons, which were symbols of the Borghese family. This work is part of a larger topographical project intended to document the splendor of ancient and modern Roman monuments for a European audience.
Giacomo Lauro was an Italian engraver and printmaker active in Rome during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. He is best known for his significant publication titled Splendore dell antica e moderna Roma, a comprehensive visual record of the city's architectural heritage. Lauro spent several decades documenting the ruins of ancient Rome alongside the newly commissioned Baroque structures of his contemporary era. His meticulously detailed engravings played a vital role in disseminating the ideals of Roman classicism across the continent and served as a primary reference for architects and travelers on the Grand Tour.
