This architectural engraving presents a reconstruction of the Mausoleum of Augustus, the monumental circular tomb located in Rome. The print depicts the structure as a tiered, cylindrical monument adorned with classical columns, statues, and tapering cypresses, reflecting Renaissance interpretations of ancient funerary architecture. Situated in a landscape featuring the Tiber River and surrounding hills, the composition includes two figures in the foreground to provide a sense of scale. Giacomo Lauro was an Italian engraver and printmaker active in Rome during the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. He is best known for his comprehensive visual record of the city's architectural heritage, a project that occupied several decades of his career. Lauro meticulously documented the ruins of ancient Rome alongside the newly commissioned Baroque structures of his era, creating a bridges between archaeological study and practical architectural theory. His detailed engravings played a vital role in disseminating the ideals of Roman classicism across Europe and served as a primary reference for scholars and travelers on the Grand Tour.
