Beskrivning

This topographical engraving presents a multi-panel view of significant architectural landmarks in the city of Goes, located in the province of Zeeland. The left side features a large perspective of the town square, dominated by the Gothic Town Hall with its distinctive clock tower and spire, while the foreground is bustling with horse-drawn carriages and figures. The right side is divided into three smaller panels depicting the Edelmans Herberg, the Old Man’s House, and the Noble Guard House, each identified by decorative scrolls. Two coats of arms held by cherubs hover in the sky, signifying the civic importance of the structures. This work is part of Smallegange's comprehensive historical and geographical study of the region, titled Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, which documented the urban layout and monumental heritage of Dutch cities during the late seventeenth century.

Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, genealogist, and translator who is primarily remembered for his monumental contribution to the historiography of the Zeeland province. His masterwork, the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, remains one of the most important reference books for the topography and history of the region, containing hundreds of detailed maps and city views. Smallegange spent decades compiling genealogical data and architectural records, collaborating with skilled engravers to create a definitive visual and written record of his homeland. His meticulous approach to documenting local history and civic identity ensured that his works remained essential resources for scholars and collectors interested in the Dutch Golden Age and the development of the United Provinces.
