Beskrivning

This topographical engraving depicts the Sint-Lievensmonster, a large Gothic church and its massive, unfinished bell tower located in Zierikzee, Zeeland. The composition shows the church in profile, highlighting the sheer scale of the tower, which was intended to be much taller but remained a heavy, truncated structure. Above the building, a celestial scene unfolds within the clouds, featuring an allegorical figure holding a torch and a cross, accompanied by cherubs. This work is part of Smallegange's Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, an extensive historical project documenting the architecture and urban landscape of the region during the late seventeenth century.

Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, genealogist, and translator who is primarily remembered for his monumental contribution to the historiography of the Zeeland province. His masterwork, the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, remains one of the most important reference books for the topography and history of the region, containing hundreds of detailed maps and city views. Smallegange spent decades compiling genealogical data and architectural records, collaborating with skilled engravers like Pieter Vogelaer to create a definitive visual and written record of his homeland. His meticulous approach to documenting local history and civic identity ensured that his works remained essential resources for scholars and collectors interested in the Dutch Golden Age.
