Beskrivning

This topographical engraving presents a three-panel view of significant public and commercial buildings in Middelburg, the capital of the Zeeland province. The top left panel depicts the Latin School, a grand Renaissance-style building with multiple stepped gables where students received classical education. To its right, the Gasthuis and its associated church are shown, featuring a bustling street scene with figures and horse-drawn carriages in front of the charitable infirmary. The large bottom panel illustrates the Koopmans Beurs (Merchants' Exchange), a spacious courtyard surrounded by classical colonnades where traders gathered for commerce. This work is a primary plate from the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, meticulously documenting the architectural prosperity and civic infrastructure of the city during the Dutch Golden Age.

Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, genealogist, and translator primarily remembered for his monumental contribution to the historiography of the Zeeland province. Smallegange spent decades compiling genealogical data and architectural records, collaborating with skilled engravers to create a lasting visual and written record of his homeland. His meticulous approach to documenting local history and civic identity ensured that his works remained essential resources for scholars and collectors interested in the development of the United Provinces.
