Bilder Mattheus Smallegange (1624–1710) – View of the Sint-Pieterskerk in Middelburg – Engraving (1696)
Beskrivning
This topographical engraving depicts the Sint-Pieterskerk, also known as the Oude Kerk, a prominent Gothic church in Middelburg, the capital of Zeeland. The composition captures the church’s large Nave, tall arched windows, and a square bell tower topped with a small spire. In the wide square in front of the building, a long funeral procession or formal parade of figures moves toward the entrance, while a horse-drawn carriage and several small groups of people occupy the foreground. This work is a primary plate from the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, documenting the architectural and religious landmarks of one of the most important trading cities in the Dutch Republic during the late seventeenth century.
Mattheus Smallegange was a Dutch historian, genealogist, and translator primarily remembered for his monumental contribution to the historiography of the Zeeland province. His masterwork, the Nieuwe Cronyk van Zeeland, remains a definitive reference for the topography and history of the area, containing hundreds of detailed maps and city views. Smallegange spent decades compiling genealogical data and architectural records, collaborating with skilled engravers to create a lasting visual and written record of his homeland. His meticulous approach to documenting local history and civic identity ensured that his works remained essential resources for scholars and collectors interested in the development of the United Provinces.
